Sewer line questions, answered
The questions Sarasota homeowners ask most before and during a sewer job. Each service page has its own questions too.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between sewer line repair and replacement?
Repair fixes a specific damaged section, such as a crack, root-filled joint or sag. Replacement installs a new line from the house to the connection. A camera inspection shows which one your line needs. Read more about how to decide.
Do you do trenchless sewer repair?
Yes, both pipe lining and pipe bursting where the pipe qualifies. Some problems, such as sags and collapsed sections, need excavation. See trenchless sewer repair.
Should I call the City or County before calling you?
If most or all fixtures stopped at the same time, yes. The blockage may be in the public line, which the utility clears. See who to call for a sewer backup.
Do you give prices over the phone?
We can describe the likely type of work, but honest prices depend on what the camera shows, how deep the pipe is and what is above it. We put prices in a written estimate.
Which areas do you serve?
Sarasota and nearby Sarasota County communities, including Siesta Key, Gulf Gate, Palmer Ranch, Fruitville and the Sarasota County side of Lakewood Ranch. See the full ZIP code list.
Do you install sewer lines for new homes and septic-to-sewer conversions?
Yes. See sewer line installation. Septic tank pumping and abandonment are separately regulated, and we explain how that part is handled.
How do I find my sewer cleanout?
Look outside near the foundation where the plumbing leaves the house, often on the side nearest the street, for a capped pipe a few inches across. Some properties also have one near the property line. We can locate it if you cannot.
Who is responsible for the sewer line between my house and the street?
The private portion is generally the property owner's, and the public main is the utility's. Where one ends and the other begins is set by your utility. See sewer lateral repair.
Does homeowners insurance cover sewer line repair?
It depends on your policy and the cause. Wear, tree roots and age are often excluded, and sewer backup may need a separate endorsement. Check with your insurer; we can provide footage and a written description.
Do I need a permit for sewer line work in Sarasota?
Replacement and many repairs need a permit. Which office issues it depends on whether the property is in the City of Sarasota, unincorporated Sarasota County or Manatee County. We confirm and include it in the estimate.
How long does a sewer line repair take?
Many spot repairs and linings are done in a day. Full replacements often take one to a few working days. Permit inspections and restoration can add time.
Are chemical drain cleaners safe for sewer lines?
We do not recommend them for main line problems. They rarely reach the blockage, can be harsh on older pipe and leave caustic water for whoever opens the line.
