ZIP codes do not follow city limits. A 34237 or 34239 address can be inside the City or in the unincorporated county, and that difference matters for sewer work. Your utility bill settles it.
Call the City first when the whole house stops draining
The City of Sarasota Utilities Department operates wastewater collection inside city limits. Its published guidance is practical:
- If only one fixture or group of fixtures is not draining, the problem is likely in your private plumbing; call a plumber.
- If most or all fixtures are not draining, the blockage may be in the City's pipes. Call 941-263-6884, option 2, any time, including weekends and holidays.
- If the City finds the blockage in its pipes, it clears it at no charge.
- The City is not obligated to reimburse you or a plumber if you call a plumber first and the blockage turns out to be in City pipes.
We follow the same logic on the phone. If what you describe sounds like the City's line, we will tell you to call them before we come out.
What sewer work looks like in the older city neighborhoods
Many in-city homes were built decades before the newer subdivisions east of I-75, and the sewer line is often original to the house. When we camera older lines we look for the material first, because each ages differently: cast iron can scale and corrode, clay joints can open to roots, and bituminous fiber pipe can deform. We do not assume a material by neighborhood; we confirm it on video.
Lots downtown, in the Rosemary District and on the keys tend to be compact, with driveways, pavers, courtyards and mature trees over the pipe route. That makes trenchless repair worth pricing on many of these properties, as long as the pipe path and slope are sound.
Tree-lined streets in neighborhoods such as Laurel Park, Hudson Bayou and Alta Vista bring their own pattern: roots at joints, and backups that return on a cycle. A camera inspection tells you whether you are dealing with one bad joint or many.
Permits inside city limits
Sewer line replacement and many repairs inside city limits go through the City of Sarasota's building and utilities permitting rather than Sarasota County's. Work at the connection to the public main may also involve the City Utilities Department. We confirm what applies to the address and include it in the estimate.

Questions from City of Sarasota homeowners
How do I know if my address is in the City of Sarasota?
Check who sends your water and sewer bill. If it is the City of Sarasota, you are a City utility customer. The City also publishes an interactive neighborhood map.
Do you work on Lido Key, St. Armands and Bird Key?
Yes. These are in the 34236 ZIP code and within the City. Compact lots and hardscape there often make trenchless methods worth comparing.
The City cleared its line but my drains are still slow. What now?
Then the restriction is likely in your private line. We can clear it and camera-inspect to find the cause.
