About Siesta Key
Siesta Key is a barrier island between Roberts Bay and the Gulf, with Siesta Key Village, Siesta Beach, Crescent Beach and Turtle Beach along its length. It shares the 34242 ZIP code across the island. Most of it is unincorporated Sarasota County and is a census-designated place, while a portion lies within the City of Sarasota.
Two bridges connect the key to the mainland, at its north and south ends, and we plan arrival times around island traffic, particularly in season.
How the island's sewer system works now
For more than 40 years, Siesta Key had its own wastewater treatment plant on the island. Sarasota County decommissioned it after state regulators fined the County over discharges, and replaced it with a master pump station that sends the island's wastewater through underground pipes to treatment facilities on the mainland. The state deadline for closing the plant was June 2018.
For homeowners, the practical point is simple: the public sewer on most of the key is a Sarasota County system, so utility-side problems go to Sarasota County Utilities, 941-861-6790 (after hours 941-316-1201). Properties in the City portion use the City of Sarasota, 941-263-6884 option 2.
What shapes sewer work on the key
- Hardscape and small lots. Pavers, pool decks, driveways and dense landscaping often cover the sewer route, so we price trenchless options wherever the pipe qualifies.
- Condos and multi-unit buildings. Shared building drains and laterals usually fall to the association, so we coordinate with the manager and keep units informed about water-use limits.
- Vacation rentals. A backup between guests is a scheduling problem as much as a plumbing one. We can schedule camera inspections and cleaning between bookings.
- Seasonal homes. A house that sits empty, then fills with family, can reveal a sag or partial blockage all at once. A camera check before the season catches it earlier.
Associations and access
Many island properties are in associations with rules on contractor hours, parking and work in common areas. Tell us about these when you book so we can plan equipment and staging.
Excavation on the island still starts with a Sunshine 811 call. Buried utilities often run close together on narrow island lots, which is another reason to locate the sewer line precisely before digging.
