Sewage coming up a drain right now? Call (941) 231-3521

Collapsed sewer line repair

When a section of sewer pipe caves in, nothing gets past it. We confirm the collapse, mark exactly where it is and replace the failed section.

Signs of a collapsed sewer line

  • Drains that stop completely and cannot be cleared, or clear briefly then stop again
  • A cable that hits a hard stop at the same distance every time
  • A depression, sinkhole or soft spot forming along the pipe route
  • Sewage surfacing in the yard or a strong odor outdoors
  • Water standing in the cleanout that will not drain

If the ground over the line is sinking or a hole has opened, keep people, pets and vehicles away from it and call us. Do not try to fill it until the cause is known.

Why sewer pipes collapse

  • Deteriorated pipe. Corroded cast iron, cracked clay or deformed fiber pipe eventually loses its shape under the soil load.
  • Roots that widen joints and cracks until a section breaks apart.
  • Loads above the pipe. Vehicles, equipment or new hardscape over a shallow or weakened line.
  • Soil loss. Water leaking from a cracked pipe can wash soil away and leave the pipe unsupported.
  • Past damage from digging, fence posts or irrigation trenching.

Confirming and locating the collapse

A camera run from the cleanout shows the collapse and records its distance. A locator then marks the spot and approximate depth at the surface. If the camera cannot reach because of standing water, we may clear what we can or access from another point.

Knowing the exact location usually keeps the excavation to one pit rather than a long trench.

How collapsed pipe is repaired

Excavation and section replacement

The most common fix: dig at the marked spot, remove the collapsed section and install new pipe with proper couplings, bedding and slope. We camera-inspect the rest of the line while it is open, because a collapse often means nearby sections are weak too.

Pipe bursting

If a cable can still be passed through the collapsed area, pipe bursting can replace the whole run, including the collapsed section, from two small pits.

Why lining is not an option here

A cured-in-place liner needs an open, round host pipe to form against. A collapsed section has to be replaced before any lining can be done on the rest of the line.

Repair process

  1. Camera, locate and mark the collapse
  2. Estimate, including whether nearby sections should be replaced at the same time
  3. Permit where required and Sunshine 811 locates
  4. Excavate, replace the section and check the rest of the line
  5. Inspection, camera verification, backfill and compaction
  6. Surface restoration as agreed

Until the repair is done

A collapsed line rarely gets better on its own, and each use of the plumbing pushes more water against the blockage. Until the section is replaced:

  • Keep water use to a minimum, and avoid laundry and dishwashers entirely.
  • Do not keep re-running a rented drain machine against the collapse; it can push debris deeper and damage the pipe further.
  • Keep vehicles and heavy equipment off the area above the pipe route.
  • If sewage reaches the surface, keep people and pets away and tell us so we can prioritize the visit.

Depending on the situation, we may be able to clear enough of the line for limited use or set up a temporary bypass while the permanent repair is scheduled and permitted.

Collapsed lines and Sarasota properties

Before digging, we check whether the collapse sits on your side of the property line or in the utility's part of the system, because that decides who repairs it. Inside city limits the City of Sarasota operates the public sewer; in unincorporated areas it is usually Sarasota County Utilities. If the collapse is under a driveway, pavers or a pool deck, we price section replacement against pipe bursting so you can see what avoiding the restoration would cost.

What affects cost

  • Depth of the collapse and soil conditions in the excavation
  • What is above it: lawn, driveway, slab edge or pool deck
  • How much of the surrounding pipe also needs replacement
  • Whether temporary measures are needed to keep the home usable
  • Permits and inspections

Where we do this work

We work across Sarasota and nearby Sarasota County communities, including downtown and the in-city neighborhoods, North Sarasota and The Meadows, Siesta Key, Gulf Gate and South Gate Ridge, Palmer Ranch and Fruitville and the Sarasota County side of Lakewood Ranch. The service area page lists every ZIP code we cover. If you are near the edge of that area, ask; we will tell you plainly whether we can reach you.

Questions we hear often

Can a collapsed sewer line be cleared with a snake?

Sometimes a cable punches through debris for a short time, but the collapse remains and the line will block again. The section has to be replaced.

Can I use my plumbing with a collapsed line?

Usually not reliably. Anything sent down will back up. We can discuss temporary measures until the repair is done.

Will the whole yard need to be dug up?

Not usually. Locating lets us dig at the collapse. If the line is failing along its length, we will discuss full replacement options, including trenchless.

Does homeowners insurance cover a collapsed sewer line?

It depends on the policy and the cause. Check with your insurer. We provide camera footage and a written description you can submit.
